Guerilla Seanchaí

Guerilla Seanchaí is a multimedia project that uses a mixture of posters and recorded video to bring traditional Irish storytelling to people walking around Dublin city centre.

Each poster is based on one specific myth, legend or folktale. Alongside an illustration and tag-line that gives a glimpse into the contents of the story, there is a QR Code. This code, once scanned, brings the viewer to a youtube video of me telling the story, with music and ambience in the background. Each poster was illustrated using fineliner pens on bristol board, before being scanned and coloured digitally on Procreate

This project was Commended in the IDI Graduate Awards 2023.

This project spawned from an interest in youtube video essays, where people use a video format to discuss a range of topics, often using elements such as props, costume and lighting to drive their point home. This seemed like an ideal way to capture live Irish storytelling.

At the same time as I was thinking of creating this, I was also doing pen-and-ink illustrations in my time away from the studio as a way to destress. I still gravitated towards mythology in these images and wanted them to be part of my final outcome - and this ended up being the perfect place for them.
